Sometimes Stepping Away Helps Us Return
Aug 30, 2026There is a difference between avoiding something and intentionally stepping away from it.
One comes from disconnection.
The other often creates clarity.
Over the years, I’ve realized that some of my deepest moments of reflection and gratitude happen when I step outside of my normal routines for a little while.
Traveling.
Spending time outdoors.
Being away from schedules and constant productivity.
Something begins to soften.
The nervous system slows down.
The mind becomes quieter.
And suddenly, things that felt overwhelming begin to feel much simpler again.
Space Creates Perspective
Every August, my family and I spend time in the Pacific Northwest visiting family and friends, walking through the woods, exploring outdoors, and stepping into a different rhythm of life for a little while.
And every year, I notice how much perspective comes from creating space.
Space from rushing.
Space from constant schedules.
Space from feeling like we always need to be producing something.
In that space, I’m reminded of what matters most:
- connection
- family
- presence
- health
- movement that supports life
These reminders are easy to lose when life becomes too fast.
Tai Chi Teaches Adaptability
Tai Chi has always taught adaptability.
Balance is never rigid.
The body is constantly adjusting:
- shifting weight
- responding to change
- softening tension
- finding center again
Life works the same way.
Some seasons ask us to push forward.
Others ask us to step back and listen more carefully.
Both are necessary.
And often, stepping away for a little while helps us return with greater awareness and appreciation.
Stepping Away Is Not Falling Behind
Many people feel guilty when they slow down.
Especially when routines change.
But rest, travel, family time, and time outdoors are not interruptions to life.
They are part of life.
And often, they support our practice more than we realize.
Walking trails.
Exploring new places.
Breathing deeply outside.
Sharing meals with people we love.
These experiences nourish us, too.
Not every season is meant for constant productivity.
Some seasons are meant for restoration.
Returning Differently
One of the beautiful things about stepping away is that we often return differently.
More grounded.
More grateful.
More aware of what truly matters.
Not because we forced growth.
But because we created enough space for clarity to emerge naturally.
This is something I continue to learn over and over again.
Sometimes the most meaningful progress happens when we stop trying so hard to force it.
A Gentle Reflection
If life has felt heavy or overwhelming lately, consider giving yourself permission to step away for a moment.
Go outside.
Spend time with people you love.
Walk slowly.
Breathe deeply.
You may be surprised how much clarity returns when you allow yourself a little space.
Sometimes stepping away is exactly what helps us return more fully.
With gratitude,
Cheryl — Lady Tai Chi
