Movement Gives Us More Life to Live

healing mind-body tai chi Jun 21, 2026

As I’ve gotten older, my understanding of movement has changed.

When I was younger, movement was often about performance. Learning more. Training harder. Pushing myself further.

But over time — through injuries, recovery, motherhood, teaching, and simply living — I’ve come to see movement differently.

Now, movement feels less about exercise…

and more about participation in life.

The Real Purpose of Practice

People often begin Tai Chi, Qigong, or mindful movement to improve something specific.

Balance.
Mobility.
Strength.
Pain.
Stress.

And those things absolutely matter.

But over time, something deeper begins to happen.

The practice starts supporting everyday life itself.

The ability to:

  • walk the beach comfortably
  • travel with more ease
  • carry groceries without strain
  • play with children or grandchildren
  • turn, bend, reach, and move with confidence

Movement helps us stay connected to the moments that matter.

Movement Beyond Exercise

As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve found myself reflecting on this even more deeply.

I think about my own father.

And I think about watching my husband become such an incredible father to our son.

The beach trips.
The impromptu river floats.
The adventures that somehow become lasting memories.

And now, watching our son develop his own love of movement — practicing Tai Chi and yoga with us, playing with swords, running, exploring, laughing — it reminds me why these practices matter so much to me.

Movement is not separate from life.

It allows us to participate in it more fully.

Tai Chi and Real-Life Movement

One of the things I love most about Tai Chi is that the benefits extend far beyond practice itself.

Tai Chi supports:

  • standing with better posture
  • walking with greater balance
  • turning with more stability
  • moving with greater body awareness
  • reducing unnecessary tension

These things may seem small.

But over time, small improvements in how we move can greatly affect how we experience daily life.

Movement begins to feel easier.

More natural.

More supported.

Longevity Is About Participation

Healthy aging is not just about adding years.

It’s about maintaining the ability to participate in life.

To continue exploring.
Learning.
Traveling.
Playing.
Connecting.

To continue showing up for the people we love.

This is one of the reasons I believe mindful movement is so powerful.

Not because it is flashy.

But because it is sustainable.

Slow, intentional movement helps us build strength, balance, awareness, and coordination in ways that support us long term.

A Practice That Evolves With Us

One of the beautiful things about Tai Chi, Qigong, and yoga is that the practice evolves as we do.

Some seasons are about building strength.

Some are about healing.

Some are simply about maintaining and continuing.

But every season of practice matters.

Every return matters.

A Gentle Reflection

The older I get, the more grateful I become for movement.

Not because I move perfectly.

But because I can still move.

I can still walk the beach.
Still practice.
Still play with my son.
Still continue learning and growing.

And that is something I never want to take for granted.

Movement gives us more life to live.

Not just more years.

More moments.

With gratitude,
Cheryl — Lady Tai Chi
