What My Students Think

I met Cheryl Cliney in Rincon, Puerto Rico, where she was teaching Tai Chi & Hatha Yoga. I came to her classes recouping after a fall on ice. Through her teachings, and stressing perfect alinement in a very kind and caring way, I was completely healed! She is a great teacher, understanding energy, the human body, mind & spirit!

I have had the pleasure of taking both Tai Chi and yoga classes with Cheryl. I found her teaching style to be the most welcoming balance of meeting individuals where they are (both that day and in their practice), as well as leading them to their personal next challenge while still managing the dynamic and flow of the class. I highly recommend her approachable, dynamic, and fun classes!

I have been studying Tai Chi and ChiGong off and on for thirty years. The difficulty had always been finding a teacher or center that worked for me. Now I can say going online to do my practice gives me full control and with the BEST instructor. With her classes I have quickly relearned the first and second section of the Yang form, and now with the Monday night class, Cheryl goes into detail how your limbs and weight should be and why you do it that way. The reasons are not only helpful but very interesting and sometimes surprising! All this is very important for doing the form well and getting maximum benefits. What can I say, she is just plane solid good!

I have been doing yoga off and on for many years but was reluctant to begin again due to my fear of injury as I often overdo it and then don’t continue. One of the first things that Cheryl advised is to go to 70% of your ability. This advice has been invaluable to my practice. I have been able to progress without fear of injury. I enjoy the Zoom classes and appreciate how personable Cheryl is. She encourages feedback and is open to helping anyone who asks.  She gives multiple options for poses so I can choose whatever suits my body on any particular day. I have been attending classes for over 8 months now and can honestly say that I feel better physically and mentally by the end of each class.

Though new to Tai Chi, I have already begun to benefit from this practice. The focus on slow, gentle movements and balance has begun to give me the confidence and skills I need to better deal with a recent diagnosis of Meniere’s Disease. I am doubly fortunate to have found a knowledgeable, enthusiastic instructor like Cheryl who encourages her clients to work at their own pace while listening to their bodies, trusting their own rhythms in the healing process.

For 40+ years, on and off, I tried practicing yoga at several different gyms often giving up when I felt I was not keeping up. I often tried to do poses that were a determent to my own body.  It wasn't until I had Cheryl for an instructor that I truly began to enjoy yoga.  She reminds me every class that everyone and each day is different (some days I feel better than other days).  Cheryl always includes modifications to the poses so that everyone can practice at their own level of expertise.  I leave her classes feeling motivated, energized, stronger and better than when I started out.  Cheryl's passion is contagious and she is an incredible yoga instructor.   She is all about her students!

I have been taking Cheryl’s Tai Chi and Qigong classes since January 2024, and I can confidently say she is an exemplary instructor. Teaching movement over Zoom isn’t easy, but Cheryl’s methodical and clear approach makes it accessible and engaging. I have no doubt that my form has improved significantly over the past few months.

This past winter was particularly difficult, as I was recovering from a broken wrist after a fall. Driving to any in-person class would have been impossible, but Cheryl’s online classes gave me the opportunity to stay active and connected during my recovery. Her classes kept me going, both physically and mentally, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Cheryl creates a safe and supportive space to practice, no matter where you are in your journey. I highly recommend her classes!

Cheryl is my ideal yoga instructor.  During 30 years of yoga practice, my body and abilities have changed and I must look for fresh approaches to my practice every day.  Cheryl's classes provide that.  She wants students to bring their needs and limitations to the mat and reminds us "every day is different."  I appreciate her conversational tone, suggested pose modifications and  explanations of the benefits of each pose.  Although I am a senior with MS, a spinal fusion and severe scoliosis, I feel like an accomplished yogini after every one of Cheryl's classes.

I’m 81 years old and had back surgery at 74, after more than two years of pain and limited mobility. Following surgery, I had to be extremely cautious for a full year on my doctor’s orders, and needless to say, I wasn’t in a good place physically. I began taking classes at my local senior center, which helped with my recovery, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that online classes became my main source of staying healthy and active—and they still are.

Of all the online classes I’ve taken, Cheryl’s are my favorite. I love the way she explains the movements and their benefits to the body. Her instruction keeps me flexible and able to continue doing the things I love, especially gardening. Cheryl’s upbeat attitude and thoughtful teaching style make every class enjoyable and effective. I hope to be an active participant in her classes for years to come!

I started studying tai chi with Cheryl in March of 2023. At that time I had been simultaneously studying two different styles for about a year and a half,  studying both the cmc37 style and trying to learn the yang family traditional hand form through both video classes and two different local instructors. I was not completely satisfied with any of the teachers I was studying with so I decided to try Cheryl’s tai chi class which was offered as a benefit through my health insurance. As of today I have been studying yang family tai chi with Cheryl for two years and it has changed my life forever. I was recently honored by receiving level 1 ranking in the Yang Family tai chi organization. I am indebted to Cheryl as without her wonderful teaching, her incredibly positive attitude and her endless patience I would not be where I am today in my yang family tai chi studies. Prior to studying tai chi I studied other martial arts and had many instructors.  Without a doubt, Cheryl is the best martial arts instructor I’ve worked with.

Cheryl is an excellent teacher who answers any questions you might have. She acknowledges individual limitation and gives accommodations, directs best breathing for each exercise and tailors the class to the participants needs. And she has a great website with videos available to practice with, or if you need to catch up or have a desire to perfect your personal Tai Chi/Qi Gong dance. Her infectious positivity is contagious! You always know that even if you didn't really feel great when you started class, you'll feel good at the end!
